What makes a lipstick nude is how close it sits to the wearer’s natural lip color or skin tone. The mouth looks finished, and nobody sees a pop of color.
Nothing about it is fixed, since the shade is relative to the person. A beige that suits fair skin looks pale on deep skin. Nudes cover a lot of ground, from pale pink and beige to peach, caramel, deep brown and mauve.
Guides don’t agree on whether a nude should match the skin. Bare lips are darker than the cheek, though. A 2018 study in the Chinese Journal of Tissue Engineering Research recorded average lip lightness (L*) of 53.25 against 61.87 on the cheek across 202 volunteers.
What Is Nude Lipstick?
Nude describes a color relationship, not one fixed shade. A lipstick earns the label by sitting close to the wearer’s own lip color or skin tone, so what reads as nude on one person looks too pale or too deep on another.
The natural lip color of 410 women aged 19 to 68 was measured in a 2024 Skin Research and Technology study. It showed a continuous spread with wide variation inside and across ethnic groups. When the data was clustered, 11 distinct lip tones came out, and the authors propose those as target shades for nude lipsticks.
Shade families that count as nude
- Beige forms the base of most nudes and runs from pale sand to deep tan. MAC calls Velvet Teddy, launched in 2004, a deep-toned beige (Marie Claire UK).
- Pink nudes are dusty or rosy and show up most on fair skin. Charlotte Tilbury’s Pillow Talk is the best-known nude-pink.
- Peach is soft and slightly coral, and it suits warm undertones.
- Brown, from cocoa to caramel, sits at the deepest end of the range.
- Mauve is a pink with a purple lean, so it reads cool. CVS lists deep mauve inside its nude range.
What nude lipstick is not
No formula defines it. Nude cuts across the main types of lipstick, from bullet to liquid, so a single shade can come in matte or gloss, and usually satin too.
Nor is there one universal beige. Charlotte Tilbury sells Pillow Talk as a shade for everyone, but the range now includes Pillow Talk Medium and Pillow Talk Intense for deeper skin.
How Undertone Decides Which Nude Works
Warm undertones do best with peach, coral and golden beige. Pink and mauve nudes go to cool undertones, along with rosy ones. Neutral undertones can carry most nudes, since the shade only needs to stay out of the extremes, neither too warm nor too cool.

Golden and peach bases pull toward warm undertones. Beyond the nudes there’s a wider set of lipstick shades that flatter warm undertones, though the nude end of it is mostly peach-beige and caramel.
For cool undertones, pink and mauve bases do best. The same logic carries into the wider set of lipstick colors that suit cool undertones, where pinks and mauves take over from beige, along with blue-based shades.
Neutral undertones get the most room to play. NYX says almost any nude works as long as it matches the skin’s depth.
Most people start with the vein test. On the inner wrist, green-looking veins point to warm, and blue or purple ones to cool. A mix points to neutral (L’Oreal Paris India).
On deeper skin the veins are hard to read, so the test stops being useful. Gold against silver jewelry works as a backup, and so does holding a white shirt under the face.
If the checks disagree, treat the undertone as neutral and swatch in daylight.
Nude Lipstick Shades for Fair, Medium, Olive and Deep Skin
Dusty pink and soft beige are the usual starting points for fair skin. Medium and olive skin do better with peach, golden beige and caramel, and deep skin tends toward brown, plum-beige and berry-leaning nudes.
Fair skin
Pale skin washes out fastest. According to Maybelline India, a nude that is too light turns chalky, and one too close to the skin disappears.
Dusty or rosy pinks work, and so does a light beige with a pink or peach lean. Nothing should be lighter than the skin itself.
Reviewers name MAC Twig, a rosy nude, for pale skin (LookFantastic) and Huda Beauty Power Bullet Cream Glow in Angel for freckled fair skin (Expert Reviews). Both are nudes inside a larger field of lipstick colors that suit fair skin.
Medium and olive skin
Medium skin does well in peach, golden beige and soft caramel, and a brown base starts to work as the skin moves toward tan and bronze (L’Oreal Paris India, Oz Hair and Beauty).
Caramel, beige and dusky pink suit olive skin, picked a shade darker than the skin to bring out its warmth (YSL Beauty UK). Red Apple Lipstick adds that peachy nudes balance the green tones in olive skin.
Deep skin
That 2024 Skin Research and Technology study found its widest spread in lip chroma and lightness among African American women, so one brown rarely covers deep skin.
Deep nudes run from rich brown to plum-beige. A broader set of lipstick colors that suit dark skin adds more depth beyond them.

Match the skin or sit deeper? The sources disagree
Brand guides don’t agree on whether a nude should match the skin or sit deeper than it. Ora and Lakme define nude as close to the skin tone, and Maybelline Australia advises a warm beige that almost matches brown skin. Revlon goes the other way and recommends one to two tones deeper or warmer than the natural lip. YSL Beauty UK tells olive skin to go darker than the complexion.
A 2018 study in the Chinese Journal of Tissue Engineering Research measured 202 volunteers and put average lip lightness (L*) at 53.25 against 61.87 on the cheek. Lips were also redder (a* 11.19 against 7.21) and less yellow.
Lips average darker than the cheek, so a nude matched to the skin lands lighter than the bare lip. That is the chalky result Maybelline India describes.
Lipstick also changes how the surrounding skin reads. A 2024 University of Leeds thesis put six Maybelline shades on 10 faces and found that lipstick color significantly shifted perceived skin lightness and redness, with minimal effect on yellowness.
That’s a small test (15 observers), and the 202-person figures are an average from one sample, not a rule for every wearer.
Match the lip’s depth and the skin’s undertone, and go one tone deeper when unsure.
Matte, Satin, Cream or Sheer: How Does Finish Change a Nude?
Finish changes opacity and shine but leaves the pigment family alone. Matte nudes read flat and polished. Satin and cream feel softer, and sheer or glossy ones let the natural lip color show through.
Matte is the most opaque finish. The full range of matte nude shades runs from pale beige to medium brown, according to Lakme.
Matte earns its place as the usual pick for everyday wear (CVS). It covers the natural lip color most fully, so the shade looks consistent across mouths. The downside is the lack of sheen and hydration, which makes dry lips show (Lakme, Red Apple Lipstick).
Satin and cream nudes are softer and more comfortable than a flat matte. The added shine shows uneven lip color more than matte does.
Sheer and glossy nudes let the natural lip show through, which forgives a near-miss shade, and Lakme’s notes on liquid and glossy formats say they suit dry lips. One tube looks different on every mouth, though, because the shade shifts with the wearer’s own lip color. CVS also places glittery nudes in evening wear, not everyday wear.
MAC’s Velvet Teddy shows the matte trade-off well enough. According to Marie Claire UK, the brand reformulated it for more comfortable wear.

What Gives Nude Lipstick Its Color?
A nude’s shade comes mostly from iron oxides, which supply the beiges and browns. Titanium dioxide adds opacity and lightens the mix, and a few certified red and orange colors tint it toward pink or coral.

On ingredient lists, iron oxides appear as CI 77491, CI 77492 and CI 77499, the red, yellow and black grades. Blending the three produces the whole beige-to-brown range.
There’s one brown that doesn’t make the cut. FDA’s table marks D&C Brown No. 1 as not permitted in lipsticks, while iron oxides carry no such restriction.
Titanium dioxide goes by CI 77891 on labels, according to the Danish consumer group Taenk. Its opacity lightens a shade, which is the likely reason a pale nude turns chalky on deeper skin.
FDA’s listing permits titanium dioxide in lipsticks with no stated limit. The EU is stricter. The European Commission asked its Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) in June 2022 to reassess titanium dioxide, including in lip care and lipstick, alongside other products with oral or inhalation exposure. The committee’s opinion (SCCS/1661/23) came in May 2024.
The SCCS reviewed data on 44 pigmentary and 40 nano grades, per Personal Care Insights. It could not exclude genotoxicity for almost all of them (two nano grades were the exception) and set no new safe limits.
Lip products draw this scrutiny because they can be incidentally ingested, and EU Regulation 2019/1857 already treats them as ingested to some extent. The review itself followed EFSA’s 2021 conclusion that genotoxicity concerns could not be ruled out for titanium dioxide as a food additive (E171). How much lipstick people end up swallowing over a lifetime is its own question.
None of this is a ban. Titanium dioxide stays authorized as a colorant in the EU, and the SCCS asked applicants to propose grade specifications (Cosmetics Observatory, 2024).

How to Apply Nude Lipstick

- Start with one thin layer of lipstick and build only where the color needs it (Revlon).
- View the shade in natural light before leaving the house (Ora).

When Does Nude Lipstick Look Wrong?
A nude can look off at the right depth if the undertone is wrong, and going lighter or darker does not fix it. Swapping to the other base family does.
Dry or chapped lips are a separate problem. Licking them worsens them, and chapping that hasn’t healed after two to three weeks calls for a board-certified dermatologist, according to the American Academy of Dermatology (2021).

Store lighting is the other trap. A 2018 study in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science measured lipstick-to-cheek color difference across 18 light sources on 87 women. The difference deviated from its average by 1.5 to 12.3%, and by up to 54.2% under one white RGB LED (Melgosa et al.).
The study used five red lipsticks, not nudes, so treat it as a rough direction.
