Neutral skin sits between warm and cool, which puts most of the middle of the lipstick range in play. Rosy nudes, dusty mauves, soft berries, muted corals and balanced reds are the usual picks.
Skin depth sets how light or rich each one should be, anywhere from fair to deep.
How you test a shade changes the verdict too. A 2023 Frontiers in Neuroscience study (Tian et al.) had 60 participants rate 15 lipsticks under 5 light sources. It found no significant correlation between the color people preferred on their lips and the one they preferred on the forearm.
Light source did matter. It significantly shifted both preference and purchase intention.
Best Lipstick Shades for Neutral Undertones
Rosy nudes, dusty mauves and soft berries come out ahead, with muted corals and balanced reds a step behind. What they share is a mixed pigment base that leans neither orange nor blue-violet, and that is what looks most natural on neutral skin.
The order below follows how consistently guides from Sigma Beauty, Plum, YSL Beauty and MasterClass recommend each family.
Rosy nudes and mauves
Dusty rose and soft mauve come up more than anything else, usually next to a pink-beige. Sigma Beauty names dusty rose, nude pinks and soft mauves. YSL Beauty points to beige or pink nudes. Faces Canada calls mauve nudes, a pink and purple blend, a frequent match for neutral skin.

Shade names are a decent first filter. Sigma Beauty says names containing “nude”, “rose” or “neutral” are good starting points. Brands don’t standardize them, though, so swatch before you buy.
Soft berries and pinks
Plum lists a sheer berry with soft roses and dusty pinks for neutral skin. MasterClass pairs pinky tones with fair skin and berry shades with darker skin.
Red Apple Lipstick recommends a neutral pinky fuchsia for deep skin with neutral undertones.
Of all the families, this one covers the most depths, from a sheer berry on fair skin to a saturated plum-berry on deep skin.
Brick, terracotta and coral
These are warm-undertone shades first.
Sigma Beauty files peachy and coral shades, warm reds and terracotta under warm undertones, and MasterClass lists orangey-red, brick-red and terra-cotta there too. Neutral skin can still borrow them, because Sigma also says neutral undertones take both warm and cool tones.
If you try one, pick the version with some pink or brown in it and skip the fully orange one.
Reds for neutral skin
Red is where neutral skin gets the most contradictory advice.
YSL Beauty says neutral undertones can pick from nearly any red. Red Apple Lipstick says warm and neutral skin should favor orange-based reds, so the red doesn’t turn pink on the lips.
Both can hold at once. Cool and warm reds look alike in the tube and read very differently on skin, which is why the cool and warm versions of red deserve a closer look before you buy. Start with an orange-leaning red that has some depth, check it in daylight, and move cooler only if it still looks right.
How Do You Know Your Undertone Is Neutral?
Neutral skin usually shows a blue-green mix in the veins and looks natural in both gold and silver, with no single cast dominating. Two tests that agree count as confirmation. One unclear test doesn’t.
Start with the inner wrist in daylight. Blue or purple veins read cool, green reads warm, and a mix of both reads neutral (YSL Beauty, L’Oreal Paris).
Jewelry is the easy follow-up. Hold gold and silver against bare skin, and if both look natural, that points to neutral (YSL Beauty).
The white paper test compares bare skin with a bright white surface, the method Perfect Corp describes. A clear yellow cast points warm, a pink one cool, and neither points neutral.
Sun reaction comes last. okdiario links gradual tanning or mild burning to neutral skin, but it’s the weakest clue of the group. NYX Cosmetics states that undertone itself does not change with sun exposure, so tanning behavior is a correlate at best.
Wrist color gives a partial read anyway. A 2012 review in the Journal of Plastic Dermatology (Fabbrocini et al.) lists stratum corneum thickness, blood flow speed, hemoglobin oxygenation, carotenoids and melanin as factors in skin color, and a vein seen through that layer reflects all of them at once.
Sources also split on what an unclear vein result means. Sigma Beauty and Ohmycream read an indistinct vein color as neutral. YSL Beauty and L’Oreal Paris ask for a visible mix of blue and green.
The first reading turns every failed test into a neutral result. Go with the second.
For a final check, swatch a rosy nude and a peach nude on your lips. If both look natural, the tests were right.
Adjusting Neutral Undertone Lipstick for Skin Depth
Undertone picks the shade family, and skin depth picks how light or rich it is. Fair skin takes soft pink-beige and peach. Medium moves to rosy mauve and warm peach, tan to berry-brown and caramel, and deep skin carries chocolate, deep mauve and neutral red.
Brands code the two separately. Pantone’s SkinTone Guide puts undertone in the first two characters of each shade number and lightness in the last two, and its March 2023 edition added 28 shades to reach 138.

Estee Lauder labels its Pure Color Creme nude shades by intensity and undertone, which shows the split on a shelf.
Disguise is the light one, neutral, a muted soft brown for fair skin. Intense Nude sits at medium, also neutral, and is a rosy nude. The deep one is Strut, neutral again, in chocolate brown.
Labels lean, though. Disguise is described as suiting neutral to warm skin, and Conquer, a dusty mauve labeled cool, is described as suiting cool, neutral to rosy undertones.
A neutral label tells you where a shade leans and not much more.
Fair skin leaves the least room for error, since a deep or stark shade overwhelms it. That is why Revlon steers it toward soft pink and peachy nudes. A wider run of lipstick colors for fair skin sits beyond the neutral range.

Where olive skin fits
Olive skin and neutral undertones overlap but are not the same label.
Maybelline Australia calls olive skin typically warm with a caramel undertone, and Red Apple Lipstick suggests peachy nudes to balance its green cast. Fashion Magazine’s makeup artist picks rose-pink-beige or peach for medium to olive skin, while L’Oreal Paris adds salmon pink, deep caramel and berry.
Peach and caramel-leaning pink turn up on more than one list. If your olive skin tests neutral, that is the lowest-risk place to start.
How Do Matte, Satin, Sheer and Gloss Finishes Change the Look?
Finish changes how strongly a shade’s undertone shows. Matte gives you the pigment at full strength, satin softens it with a light sheen, and sheer or glossy formulas let your own lip color mix in.
Bluemercury makes the case for satins. Concentrated pigment makes small undertone differences more apparent, while the sheen reads softer and more dimensional than a matte version of the same shade.
Matte means dense pigment, no shine and the longest wear, and okdiario ties it to bold colors. A high-pigment satin on an emollient base gets a similar payoff (Beautylish).
Sheer and tinted formulas give the “my lips but better” result that Fashion Magazine builds its neutral nude advice around. Gloss adds a subtle shine to neutral tones, according to okdiario, and makeup artist Darcie Teasley tells Click2Houston it makes lips look fuller and smoother.
The gap between matte and satin is mostly texture and comfort. Elizabeth Arden describes matte as shine-free and slightly drier and satin as creamier, and a side-by-side look at matte versus satin lipstick covers wear time and feel.

Where the “Any Shade Works” Advice Falls Short
Neutral skin tolerates more shades than warm or cool skin does, but there are limits. Neon oranges and icy lilacs go wrong, as do reds that read berry or pink and nudes much paler than the skin, even in guides that say most shades work.
Extremes at either end of the range
Nykaa’s undertone guide tells neutral skin to avoid shades that lean too far to either side, with neon orange and icy lilac as its examples.
Neon and strongly orange shades belong to warm skin first. Icy lilac and sharply blue-violet ones belong to cool skin first.
okdiario states the same limit more gently: most shades work on neutral skin, although balance remains key.

A red sold as universal still reads differently from face to face.
Fenty Beauty’s Stunna Lip Paint is described on its product page as a range of universal shades handpicked by Rihanna. Reviews of the red, Uncensored, split. A MakeupAlley reviewer sees a dark but neutral red. An Ulta reviewer with neutral undertones finds a magenta-leaning undertone that reads too berry.
Tube color and marketing labels do not settle it. Judge a red by how it behaves on your own lips.

Nudes lighter than the skin

The disagreement is about intent. A paler shade works as a deliberate bright accent on deeper skin, but as an everyday nude, stay at or deeper than your lip color.
The forearm swatch has its own problem. The Frontiers in Neuroscience study (Tian et al., 2023) found no significant correlation between preference ratings for lipstick on the lips and on the forearm, and light source significantly changed color preference and purchase intention.
So a forearm swatch can screen a shade out. It can’t confirm one.
Which Named Lipstick Shades Do Brands Label as Neutral?
Few brands label a lipstick neutral outright. Most name a color and a finish, and the undertone call is left to the wearer and to reviewers, which is why one shade gets read as neutral, warm or off by different people.
Sephora Canada runs a dedicated page for lipstick for neutral undertones, built around customer reviews, and one listed shade is named Neutral Rose and described as a neutral pinky rose.

Dolce Vita is the lowest-risk start of the four, because a sheer formula lets your own lip color soften any mismatch.
Pillow Talk is the cautionary case. Live That Glow’s review lists four shades (Fair, Original, Medium, Intense) and quotes a Reddit user with medium-dark olive skin whom both Original and Medium wash out.
A Sephora UK reviewer with light skin and neutral undertones also found the Medium undertone disappointing, which fits Charlotte Tilbury describing it as a warm berry pink.
Matte nudes like Velvet Teddy leave the least room for a mismatch, so compare a few matte nude lipstick shades side by side before committing.
How to Test and Apply a Neutral Undertone Lipstick
Test on bare lips in daylight, which fits the finding above that light source changes what people prefer. The order after that matters more than it looks.
- Swatch the shade on your lips or jawline and skip the forearm.
- Read the shade’s own undertone. Maybelline India notes that lipsticks carry warm, cool or neutral undertones just like skin, so place the swatch next to a shade that already works and see whether the new one pulls more orange or more purple.
- Set the depth against your lips. Faces Canada puts a nude one to two shades deeper than your natural lip color, not your skin tone.
- Map the lips with short strokes instead of one continuous line (Maybelline India).
- Apply liner before lipstick and fill the lips if you want staying power (MAC, ELF Cosmetics). Blend where liner meets lipstick, then add lipstick or gloss on top.
The liner shade is where sources disagree on the reference point. MAC Cosmetics says the same or a similar shade as the lipstick, and NYX says to stay close in shade. ELF Cosmetics and Nykaa both give a different rule, one to two shades darker than your lips.
