What Color Lipstick Goes with Purple Eyeshadow?

What Color Lipstick Goes with Purple Eyeshadow?

A nude, pink, mauve or berry lip is the best lipstick for purple eyeshadow in most cases, and the exact pick depends on how light or deep the purple is. Lavender looks good with a sheer rose, while eggplant can take burgundy or a muted brown-nude.

Hue isn’t the only thing that moves the result. Jeong and Kang (Journal of the Korean Living Science Association, 2006) had 216 female undergraduates rate 36 simulated faces that varied eyeshadow color, lipstick color and lipstick tone (vivid, light, dull or dark), and the perceived face image shifted with all three.

So the right shade depends on tone as well as hue. Skin undertone and finish settle whatever is left.

Which Lipstick Shades Go With Each Purple Eyeshadow Tone?

Most purple eyeshadows get along with nude, pink, mauve and berry lips.

How deep the purple is sets the ceiling for the lip. Light lavender takes sheer, soft shades. Deeper purples like eggplant can carry burgundy, mauve or a muted nude without the lip getting lost.

Purple also has a temperature. Pantone named Ultra Violet (18-3838) its 2018 Color of the Year and described it as a blue-based purple, which sits at the cool end of the range.

Red-leaning plums sit at the warm end. Match the lip to that temperature and the pairing holds together, so cool pinks and rose go beside blue-violets, and berry or brick-leaning shades go beside red-violets.

Purple tone Lip shades that work What the pairing does
Lavender, lilac Sheer rose, soft pink, peach nude Keeps the pastel lid as the focus
Violet, orchid Rose, mauve, warm nude, light berry Adds color without competing
Plum Dusty rose, muted berry, soft brown-nude Builds tone-on-tone depth
Eggplant, deep aubergine Burgundy, brown-nude, blue-based red Turns the look into an evening look

Nude is the safest choice in that table. Best Life Online noted that a nude lip can balance a more dramatic pop of color on the eye, and that women with brown eyes in particular may find purple eyeshadow uniquely flattering when it is offset with a neutral lip.

Finding the right nude is the harder part, since picking a nude lipstick that suits your skin comes down to undertone and depth.

Red works when it leans blue or burgundy. CVS says burgundy and mahogany reds pair best with most purples because those shades already carry some purple.

Whether a red reads cool or warm decides the outcome, and cool versus warm red lipsticks differ in the blue or orange base underneath. Orange-based reds sit on the opposite side of the wheel from a cool violet, so they pull hard against it.

Makeup.com by L’Oreal (2020) shows a deep-eye example. Makeup artist Jonet Williamson paired a burgundy eyeshadow, violet liner and violet mascara with a just-bitten red lip.

Why Some Lip Colors Flatter Purple Eyeshadow More Than Others

YouTube player

Lip colors that sit next to purple on the color wheel (pink, rose, mauve, berry) blend into it. Colors across the wheel, like peach, contrast with it, and nudes stay out of the hue contest altogether.

Each route gives a different result, and none of them is wrong.

Pink, rose, mauve and berry sit beside violet, so lid and lip read as one color story. The World of Beauty blog at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater notes that analogous shades blend into each other instead of fighting.

Going the other direction, yellow sits opposite violet on the traditional artist’s wheel, so blue-violets pair with yellow-orange tones such as peach and apricot. Makeup artist Robert Jones told Into The Gloss (2013) to look across the wheel instead of matching a feature’s own color.

Nude and brown-nude lips sit outside the wheel logic, which is why they work with nearly any purple.

Red-violet plums are a special case. Their opposite is yellow-green, and nobody wears that on their lips, so plums get analogous or neutral lips by default.

The wheel has limits. It predicts the relationship between two hues, not how much visual weight each one carries.

A saturated peach on a saturated violet lid gives you two focal points. Skin undertone shifts the result too, which Jones Road Beauty flags in its color wheel guide.

Digital color wheels built on red, green and blue primaries also place the opposites differently. The yellow rule belongs to the artist’s wheel that makeup education uses.

The wheel only settles the hue. How strong each color is matters just as much.

Should the Lips Be Bold or Soft With Purple Eyeshadow?

YouTube player

Soft, for most purple eyeshadow looks. Let one feature carry the color and let the other recede.

A matching or deep lip is the exception, and it works when the eye stays simple.

Makeup artists split on this, and the split is about purpose rather than taste. Nina Soriano recommends a light lip stain or lip oil to balance a purple pop, while CVS calls a matching purple lip the most striking way to wear purple eyeshadow.

Soft covers everyday wear, and matching is the pick when you want a statement.

Soft Lip With a Bold Purple Eye

Etcoff and colleagues (PLoS ONE, 2011) tested three makeup looks with rising luminance contrast between facial features and skin. The highest-contrast look was rated more attractive and competent than bare faces, and less trustworthy.

Russell (Perception, 2009) found that cosmetics consistently raise the contrast between the eyes, lips and surrounding skin.

Neither study split the eyes from the lips, so the “one loud feature” rule is craft convention, not a measured result. What both studies do treat is eyes and lips as one contrast system, which explains why a deep plum lid and a deep berry lip stack into a heavy look.

For the lip itself, a sheer rose or soft pink is the easy call. A peach nude works too, and a light stain or lip oil does the job if you don’t want much color at all.

Matching works only when the purple is not at full strength in both places.

A sheer purple lip with a defined eye repeats the lid’s color at low volume, so the two read as a set.

Going opaque changes the rules. Lancome makeup artist Myles Sexton says a bold purple lip needs a very soft eye and clean skin so the whole look supports the lip.

Pulling off a purple lip well also depends on picking a shade that suits your skin, and the purple lipstick guide covers that in detail.

Daytime Versus Evening Pairings

YouTube player

For daytime, a lavender or lilac lid sits well with sheer rose, peach nude or a tinted balm, kept to one light coat.

Evenings can go heavier. Plum or eggplant on the lid pairs with burgundy, mauve-brown or a blue-based red on the lip, and a matte or satin lip with a softer lid keeps it from tipping over.

Darker lipsticks make lips look smaller, according to makeup artist Robert Jones (Into The Gloss, 2013). A deep berry suits fuller lips, and a lighter berry suits thinner ones.

Dark lipstick also needs a lid that stays softer than the lip, so wearing a dark lip well starts with turning the eye down.

How Do Skin Undertone and Skin Depth Change the Best Lip Shade?

YouTube player

Undertone sets the temperature of the lip shade, and skin depth sets how much pigment it needs to show up. The purple lid is only half of the equation.

Skin Undertone

Light, medium and deep complexions all have an undertone, which is the hue sitting under the surface of the skin. Maybelline’s undertone guide stresses that warm, cool and neutral say nothing about ethnicity.

If you’re cool-toned, blue-based pinks, rose and cool berries are the safe zone. Warm skin leans toward peach, coral-pink, rosewood and brown-leaning nudes. Neutral can wear most of it, with the lid making the final call.

Warm skin under a blue-based violet lid is the pairing that needs a bridge, and the lipstick colors that suit warm undertones include rose-brown and warm berry shades that sit between the two temperatures.

Skin Depth

Charlotte Tilbury’s own guide warns that pale pinks and light beige nudes can sometimes turn ashy on dark skin. Her fix is to pair a lighter lipstick with a darker lip liner.

Makeup artist Kira Nasrat told Who What Wear that she steers deeper skin toward nudes with a hint of berry or mauve, which are the same notes that sit comfortably under a purple lid.

Fair skin hits high contrast fast, so sheer to medium coverage reads better than a full-strength deep berry. Medium and tan skin carry most of the range, from rose to burgundy, with little adjusting.

Deep skin needs enough pigment to register, so berry-mauve nudes, brown-plum or burgundy beat pale pinks.

Nudes show the depth problem fastest. Makeup artist Quinn Murphy says too light veers ashy and too dark veers muddy, which is where picking a nude lipstick by undertone and depth pays off.

How to Test a Pairing Before You Commit

  1. Find your undertone. Check the veins on your forearm, compare gold and silver jewelry, and hold a white cloth to your bare face (Maybelline). Thrive Causemetics calls the vein test a starting point, so confirm it with a second method.
  2. Read the lid. Hold the purple next to your skin in daylight and decide whether it leans blue or red.
  3. Set the intensity. Go sheer to medium for a deep or shimmering lid, and full strength only when the lid is light or neutral.
  4. Swatch both. Put the lip shade and a swipe of the lid shade side by side on your jawline in daylight, then judge the whole face.

Which Lipstick Finish Works Best With Purple Eyeshadow?

YouTube player

Satin and sheer finishes work for most purple eyeshadow looks, because they add color without competing with the lid.

Matte is better saved for deep, defined evening lips, and gloss goes with a matte lid.

Finish Pros Cons
Matte Highest color payoff, long wear Can emphasize lip texture and dryness
Satin Strong color with comfort Sheen can compete with a shimmer lid
Gloss Reflective finish makes lips look fuller Low pigment, weak on dark or discolored lips
Sheer Forgiving, goes on like a balm Color may not register on pigmented lips

Tellie, a freelance makeup artist who trained at Make Up For Ever Academy in Seoul, says matching lip finish and weight to the rest of the makeup is what makes a look read as professional (Project Vanity).

The lid finish is the easiest thing to go by. A matte purple lid takes satin or gloss on the lip, which adds dimension. Shimmer or metallic lids do better with matte, satin or sheer lips so only one surface reflects light, and a deep smoky lid sits fine with satin or a soft matte lip.

Satin wears almost as long as matte, according to QC Makeup Academy, and how matte and satin lipsticks compare comes down mostly to sheen and comfort.

Very matte formulas tend to show dryness. Nykaa’s lipstick guide recommends satin or creamy matte formulas for dry lips, and Houston Life (July 2026) quotes makeup artist Darcie Teasley recommending satin or gloss.

A sheer lipstick goes on as easily as a lip balm, per QC Makeup Academy, which makes it the lowest-effort partner for a bold lid.

When Does a Lip Color Clash With Purple Eyeshadow?

YouTube player

A lip clashes when it fights the purple’s temperature or repeats its intensity at full strength. Orange-based reds, orange itself, neon pinks and flat pale nudes are the usual offenders.

Each clash has a condition behind it, and most have a quick fix.

An orange-based red sits across the temperature line from a cool violet, so swap in a blue-based red or burgundy. Orange works with purple only in a cool, blue-leaning version (Makeup.com by L’Oreal).

Neon or hot pink puts two full-strength colors in the same spot, and dropping the lip to sheer fixes that. Quinn Murphy told Who What Wear that nudes go flat easily, so pick one with a berry or mauve note.

To check a red, swatch it beside the lid in daylight. The gap between cool and warm red lipsticks is easier to see side by side than on a shelf.

Sources disagree on orange. Makeup.com by L’Oreal says orange lipstick pairs with cool colors like purple only when the orange carries a lot of blue, while a 2018 column in The Press (New Zealand) called metallic purple eyes with orange lips striking.

The difference is intent, since one source gives everyday guidance and the other describes a deliberate statement.

If you want to try it, pick a cool, blue-leaning orange and keep the lid to a soft wash of purple, as a 2014 Beautylish video suggests. Wearing orange lipstick with confidence is its own skill.

Published testing of lip and lid pairings is thin. A 2007 Korean study had 768 female undergraduates rate 128 lipstick-and-clothing combinations, with violet eyeshadow as one variable.

Red lipstick with blue-green clothing, and red-purple lipstick with yellow-green clothing, landed in the disharmony range. Clothing color was part of the test, so the result speaks to total coordination more than to lip and lid alone.

Clash is conditional. Change the temperature or the intensity, and most of these pairings stop fighting.

Lipstick for Purple Eyeshadow FAQ

Does purple eyeshadow work with every eye color?

Yes. L’Oreal Paris says purple eyeshadow suits any eye color, and Sixty and Me notes that grey and blue eyes pop with purple and plum.

The lip follows the purple you pick, not the iris.

Which lip color goes with purple eyeshadow on green eyes?

A soft rose, mauve or brown-nude lip keeps the focus on the eyes. L’Oreal Paris calls green and purple complementary, though the traditional artist’s wheel puts yellow opposite violet.

Either way, the pairing makes green eyes stand out.

What lipstick suits brown eyes with purple eyeshadow?

Dusty rose or a muted berry. L’Oreal Paris recommends warmer purple hues for brown eyes, and makeup artist Neil Scibelli told Best Life Online that berry tones are among the most common lip shades for brown eyes.

How do I pair lipstick with purple eyeshadow if I have blue eyes?

Go cool. L’Oreal Paris advises cooler purple hues for blue eyes, so a blue-based pink, rose or soft berry lip sits in the same temperature range.

Warm peach and coral lips pull away from that cool lid.

Do I need lip liner with purple eyeshadow?

No, liner is optional. It earns its place with creamy lipsticks, which can feather and bleed, according to MECCA.

For a natural look, makeup artist Darcie Teasley (Houston Life, July 2026) suggests a liner one or two shades deeper than your natural lip color.

Which Lip Shade to Try First With Purple Eyeshadow

YouTube player

Start with a rose-toned nude in a sheer or satin finish. It trades drama for repeatability, since the same lip then works with most purple lids in a collection.

Change the shade first if something looks off, because it’s the costliest choice to reverse. Intensity and finish are easy to fix afterward, with one more coat or a blot for the first and a dab of gloss for the second.

This advice was last verified in October 2026. It rests on makeup artist practice and rating studies with simulated faces, so a daylight study with real wearers would change it.

Finished purple makeup looks show these pairings on a complete face.
