Bobbi Brown sells it as a moisturizer and primer in one, so it hydrates and gives foundation something to grab onto. Face Base+ replaced the original formula on July 17, 2026 (PR Newswire, 2026), and both versions go on cleansed skin before makeup.
The brand’s own pages don’t agree on one verb. Retailer copy says gently press, while the Canadian product page says gently massage. The amount is the same either way.
How to Use Bobbi Brown Face Base, Step by Step
Start with cleansed skin. After that the routine is short.
- Cleanse, then finish any serum or lighter skincare you plan to wear.
- Dispense a pea-size amount of Face Base.
- Warm it between your fingertips.
- Press it gently into the face. Bobbi Brown’s copy describes the result as plump and dewy.
- Move on to corrector and foundation.
The pea-size, press-in method comes from Face Base+ product copy, which retailers such as Ballantynes and LookFantastic repeat. Listings for the original say the same thing in fewer words: apply to just-cleansed skin and press it on.
Cleansing and any serum count as skin prep before makeup, and Face Base closes that stage.
How much to use
Pea-sized. That is the brand’s recommended amount, per the usage fields on LookFantastic’s Face Base+ listing.
There is nothing more to the instruction. Dry areas can take a second, smaller press, but that is a practical call and not a brand direction.
Eye area and neck
Original listings say to apply to just-cleansed skin and avoid the eye area. Face Base+ is less consistent. Most listings I reviewed (LookFantastic, Ballantynes) carry no eye-area warning, and the brand points to Vitamin Enriched Eye Base for under the eyes. Sephora US’s Face Base+ gift set listing still says to avoid the eye area.
The neck is a gray area too. Strawberrynet’s retailer instructions say face and neck, and a Bobbi Brown pro tip hosted on Boots says to massage into the face and neck. The Face Base+ directions I reviewed don’t mention the neck at all.
Keep Face Base off the lash line and use Eye Base around the eyes, and you’ve satisfied both sets of instructions.
How long to wait before foundation
Bobbi Brown gives no wait time. Strawberrynet’s retailer copy says to let it sit for 1 to 2 minutes so it absorbs.
The brand’s own routine skips the pause and goes straight from Prep to Perfect, with foundation buffed on using the Full Coverage Face Brush, starting at the center of the face and blending outward.
If the surface still feels slick after a minute, give it longer before you apply foundation over it.
Where Face Base Fits in Your Routine
It goes after cleansing and the rest of your skincare, and before corrector and foundation. Most people who log it in a routine use it in the morning.
Skinsort’s page for the original formula (last updated April 28, 2025) draws on 181 shared routines, and the pattern is pretty clear.

That page predates Face Base+, and Skinsort users are a self-selected group, so read the numbers as habits and not as instructions.
Can it replace a separate moisturizer?
Under makeup, yes.
Bobbi Brown sells it as a moisturizer and primer in one, and its Face Base+ copy folds hydration and priming into a single step. The usage line calls it the final step of your skincare routine, which is where a moisturizer normally sits.
Morning and night
LookFantastic’s Face Base+ listing tags it for both AM and PM, using the brand’s usage fields. Marie Claire’s tester also uses it at night as a light, mask-like treatment, while noting it is marketed as makeup prep.
Neither source gives a night schedule, so treat PM use as optional.
What goes before and after it
Bobbi Brown’s routine comes from the original listing, with the Eye Base pairing taken from Face Base+ copy. It opens with Prep, which means Face Base plus Vitamin Enriched Eye Base under the eyes. Correct follows, using the Skin Corrector Stick with concealer on top. Perfect closes it out with Skin Long-Wear Weightless Foundation SPF 15, buffed on with the Full Coverage Face Brush.
The Correct step goes on under-eye discoloration with the Concealer Blending Brush, close to the lashline and inner corner. It is the same job as applying a color corrector under the eyes, blended with a finger before concealer.
For a shine-free finish, the brand’s Natural Matte look dusts Sheer Finish Pressed Powder over high-shine areas after foundation.
Face Base sits at the bottom of that stack, the same rule behind layering makeup in any routine.
Face Base vs Face Base+: Which Formula You Have and What Changed
Bobbi Brown Cosmetics launched Face Base+ on July 17, 2026 at its counters and on BobbiBrownCosmetics.com. Marie Claire calls it a reformulation and replacement of the original.
The application method above works for both. Only the formula and one instruction line differ.

What changed in Face Base+
The SuperVitamin Blend carries five times the vitamins, led by niacinamide (B3), panthenol (B5) and vitamin C, according to Bobbi Brown Cosmetics. Hydration gets glycerin plus more hyaluronic acid and vitamin B5 (Marie Claire).
Smoothing comes from acetyl glucosamine, a sugar-derived ingredient meant to refine the look of texture. And the silicones are gone, both D5 (cyclopentasiloxane) and dimethicone crosspolymer.
Marie Claire notes that D5 is set to be restricted in leave-on cosmetics in the EU from June 2027. The rule, Regulation (EU) 2024/1328, caps D5 in leave-on products at 0.1% from June 6, 2027. Bobbi Brown has not linked the change to that rule.
How solid the 24-hour priming claim is
It is a brand claim. The press release and the retailer copy I reviewed do not say how 24-hour priming was measured.
The one figure that comes with a stated panel is hydration. Bobbi Brown’s clinical testing on 26 women found 122% more moisture immediately after use, as listed on Sephora India’s product page.
Twenty-six people is a small panel, and the testing is brand-run. Treat it as a signal, not a guarantee.
Should you finish the original tub?
Yes. The method is the same, so there is no reason to waste a half-used jar.
Switch at the next purchase, since the original is being replaced.
Expect a slightly different feel. Bobbi Brown says the buttery texture and grapefruit-geranium scent carry over, while Marie Claire’s tester found Face Base+ lighter than the original. That is one editor’s skin, so judge it on yours.
What the Vitamins and Hydrators in Face Base Do
Bobbi Brown’s key ingredient list for Face Base+ runs niacinamide, vitamin B5, vitamin C, vitamin E, acetyl glucosamine, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, squalane and shea butter.
Most of them hydrate or smooth skin. The brightening and protection claims belong to the vitamins.
Hydrating and barrier ingredients
Bobbi Brown’s product page says niacinamide (B3) hydrates and supports the skin barrier, and panthenol (B5) does the same job alongside it. Glycerin and hyaluronic acid make up the humectant pair in the HydroPlump Moisture Complex. Squalane and shea butter are emollients that add cushion.
Every function above is brand wording. None of the sources I retrieved includes an independent trial of these ingredients in this formula.
Brightening and protective vitamins
Vitamin C brightens the look of skin and evens its tone. Vitamin E protects against blue light, pollution and other environmental stressors, according to Bobbi Brown.
On the ingredient list they appear as ascorbyl glucoside and tocopheryl acetate, both derivatives of the vitamins rather than the pure forms.
Each benefit is worded as an appearance claim, so it counts as a cosmetic promise and not a treatment.
What the ingredient list shows
Niacinamide sits 11th on the Face Base+ ingredient list on Bobbi Brown’s Canadian page, and sodium hyaluronate (hyaluronic acid) sits 22nd.
US rules order cosmetic ingredients by predominance, but anything present at 1% or less can be listed in any order (FDA, 21 CFR 701.3). The list tells you what is in the jar, not exact amounts.
Water and C9-12 alkane lead it, followed by emollients such as bis-diglyceryl polyacyladipate-2 and shea butter. No silicone appears anywhere.
The slip comes from hydrocarbon emollients such as C9-12 alkane, isododecane and hydrogenated polyisobutene. That fits Marie Claire’s description of lightweight emollients and texture enhancers.
Together they make the cream spread easily and leave grip for foundation, which is the job of a makeup primer.
Texture and scent
Bobbi Brown describes a buttery-smooth texture and a 100% natural grapefruit-geranium scent, per ISO 16128 (from plant sources). Marie Claire’s tester found grip for makeup without any tackiness.
The scent is real, not just marketing. Grapefruit peel oil and geranium flower oil both appear on the ingredient list.
Which Skin Types Face Base Suits, and Where It Falls Short
Bobbi Brown labels Face Base+ as suitable for all skin types, which is a change from the original.
That is a brand claim, so the limits below matter before you trust it on reactive skin.
What the labels say
The original was labeled for normal to oily skin (Sephora UK listing). Face Base+ widens that to all skin types, including normal, oily, dry and combination (Bobbi Brown Canada). The brand adds that it is safe for sensitive skin, non-comedogenic and non-acnegenic.
Dry skin is where the new label matters most, since the original excluded it. Makeup still behaves differently there, so the steps for applying makeup on dry skin still apply on top of Face Base+.
Where it falls short
- The ingredient list names grapefruit peel oil and geranium flower oil, plus fragrance components such as geraniol, citronellol, linalool and citral
- Boots Ireland’s listing for the original carries a “Contains Vitamin A” line, and I found no equivalent line on Face Base+ pages
- Bobbi Brown flags reviews dated before July 1, 2026 as written about the previous formulation, so rating averages blend two formulas
- No sun protection is listed for Face Base+, so SPF stays a separate step
Bobbi Brown calls Face Base+ safe for sensitive skin, while Marie Claire’s tester flags the scent for anyone with very fragrance-sensitive skin.
If your skin is reactive, test a small area first, and read up on makeup for sensitive skin before layering more on top.
Where Bobbi Brown’s own pages disagree
Parts of the usage guidance above follow retailer copy, and Bobbi Brown’s Canadian product page words three points differently.
On the verb, the Canadian page says to gently massage a pea-size amount onto just-cleansed skin, where retailer copy for Face Base+ says gently press. The amount and the skin prep match.
On night use, the Canadian page says Face Base+ can go on morning and night. That settles the point Marie Claire’s tester raised by calling it a makeup-prep product.
SPF is the odd one. The usage line calls Face Base+ the final skincare step, but the brand FAQ says SPF goes on after it, as the last skincare step before makeup.
Which Face Base Size Is Worth Buying?
The 100ml costs about a third less per ml than the 15ml in both the US and UK price lists, so the right size depends on how fast you will finish it.

Prices are list prices as of October 2026 and move with promotions. LookFantastic’s UK listings, for one, have shown 20% off on some sizes.
The 15ml is for trial or travel and has the highest cost per ml. Once it has proven itself on your skin, the 50ml is the default for regular use. The 100ml is cheapest per ml, which only matters if you will finish the jar.
None of the Face Base+ pages I reviewed states a period after opening, so check the symbol on the jar before buying the 100ml.

Can you wear Face Base without makeup?
Yes. Bobbi Brown’s Canadian FAQ says Face Base was originally developed as a moisturizer, and artists only later used it as a primer.
Marie Claire’s tester also wears Face Base+ on its own when she wants skin to look more even.
How can you refresh makeup with Face Base during the day?
A Bobbi Brown pro tip hosted on Boots says to warm a little in your fingertips and press it over the cheeks, on top of makeup, for a healthy-glow finish.
The tip appears under the Vitamin Enriched Face Base name, and I found no equivalent line on Face Base+ pages.
Does sunscreen go before or after Face Base?
After. Bobbi Brown’s own FAQ calls SPF the last step of skincare before makeup.
The Face Base+ listings I reviewed show no SPF in the product itself, so it still needs its own step.
Which foundation does Bobbi Brown pair with Face Base?
The brand’s routine uses Weightless Skin Foundation SPF 15, the current listing name for what older copy calls Skin Long-Wear Weightless Foundation SPF 15.
Bobbi Brown’s Canadian page adds that any favorite foundation works over Face Base+.
Fixing Makeup That Creases Over Face Base
Start with the amount if makeup creases over Face Base. Then change the wait, and after that the layer order. Those are the variables Bobbi Brown and its retailers actually specify.
Use one pea-size amount and no more. Leave a pause before foundation. If SPF is in your routine, it goes after Face Base and before makeup.
That order follows cost. The first two changes are free and reversible, while the third rearranges a routine.
Bobbi Brown’s pages, checked October 10, 2026, offer no troubleshooting steps for creasing, so this sequence builds on documented directions rather than brand advice.
The trade-off is a slightly longer morning, since a pause adds time before foundation goes on.
