Hello Sailor

Navy blue in the tube. A cool sheer berry on your lips.

Hello Sailor has been discontinued along with the wider Lipstick Queen range. The distinctive all-blue aluminium tube makes it easy to identify when hunting on eBay or Poshmark, where it occasionally surfaces. It performed best on cool-toned skin and was widely loved as a topper over berry and plum lipsticks. We recommend the alternatives below for ongoing use.

Hello Sailor was Lipstick Queen's nautical answer to the Frog Prince. Where Frog Prince used pH chemistry to shift from green to pink, Hello Sailor took a simpler approach: a translucent navy blue pigment suspended in the same nourishing Vitamin E base, which blended with each wearer's natural lip colour to create a personalised cool-toned berry tint. The deeper and more pigmented your lips, the richer the result — ranging from a soft bluish lavender on pale lips to a full berry-plum stain on deeper tones.

Launched in 2013 and packaged in a sleek all-blue aluminium tube with nautical pin-up graphics, Hello Sailor flew off shelves at Barneys New York and Space NK from its first week on sale. Like its sister products, it wore like a tinted balm — buttery, slip-forward, and deeply moisturising — and carried a bonus that no other blue lipstick could claim: it made your teeth look measurably whiter.

A Nod to the Nautical

Lipstick Queen launched Hello Sailor in May 2013, timed perfectly with New York's Fleet Week, and the press loved the nautical conceit. The product was inspired by the idea of a naughty-cool shade — the kind of colour a pin-up girl on a sailor's arm might wear, bold enough to be memorable but sheer enough to look wearable. The packaging leaned fully into the theme: an all-blue aluminium tube, matte-finished, with vintage pin-up graphics on the cardboard box that quoted the V-J Day kiss in Times Square.

Unlike Frog Prince, which used a pH chemical reaction to shift colour, Hello Sailor's mechanism was more straightforward: a translucent navy blue pigment mixed visually with the wearer's natural lip colour to produce a personalised cool-toned berry. The result varied — pale lips tended toward a bluish lavender or soft plum; deeper lips produced a richer berry-blackberry — but always landed somewhere cooler and more interesting than a conventional berry lipstick.

It was reportedly flying off shelves at Barneys New York from its first week on sale and rolled out to Space NK, Net-A-Porter, and Nordstrom shortly after. A lip gloss version followed in 2015, carrying the same navy-to-pinky-mauve transformation with added blue pearl shimmer and a serum-like formula enriched with omega-3 Algae extract. Both were later discontinued when Lipstick Queen wound down as a brand.

Blue Pigment in a Vitamin E Treatment

The official brand description positioned Hello Sailor as "sheer blue pigment suspended in a protective Vitamin E treatment" — a framing that was more accurate than most lipstick marketing copy. The formula was essentially identical in base to Medieval and Frog Prince: a Castor Seed Oil foundation giving the characteristic gel-like slip and glossy finish, supported by Shea Butter, Mango Seed Butter, Meadowfoam Seed Oil, Sunflower Seed Oil, and Hydrogenated Olive Oil for comfort and condition.

What differentiated Hello Sailor was the pigment selection. Where Medieval used warm red oxides, Hello Sailor used Blue 1 Lake (CI 42090), Red 27 (CI 45410), Iron Oxides (CI 77499), and Manganese Violet (CI 77741) — a cool, blue-violet combination that gave the bullet its deep navy appearance but went on almost transparently when applied to lips, blending with natural lip pigment to create the berry shift. This also produced the tooth-whitening effect: blue undertones on lips optically counteract the natural yellow tones in tooth enamel, making teeth appear brighter.

The formula scored well for comfort with reviewers — the general consensus was that it felt like a nourishing lip balm, and the wear pattern left a subtle berry stain that held for longer than the visible gloss layer. Critics noted the sheerness was extreme on some skin tones, producing barely detectable colour. On cool-toned and medium complexions, the results were considerably more flattering.

How to Get the Best from Hello Sailor

01
Apply to Bare Lips

For the berry-shift effect, apply directly to clean, bare lips. The blue blends with your natural lip colour in the first minute after application. One swipe gives a sheer tint; allow 2–3 minutes for the full shift to develop before assessing the colour.

02
Layer to Deepen

Build up with two or three coats for a more saturated berry result. Each layer adds both depth and a touch more of the visible blue shimmer. Those with very pale or lightly pigmented lips generally needed more layers to see significant colour pay-off.

03
Use as a Topper

Hello Sailor excelled as a gloss topper over berry, plum, or mauve lipsticks. Applied over an opaque berry base, it added a cool topaz dimension and a glossy finish that transformed any berry lip from flat to multidimensional — and boosted the tooth-whitening effect.

Full Ingredient List

As listed on the 0.12 oz formulation:

Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Vegetable Oil (Olus/Huile Vegetale), Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax (Candelilla Cera/Cire De Candelilla), Beeswax (Cera Alba/Cire D'Abeille), Ozokerite, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Tocopherol Acetate (Vitamin E), Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil, Mangifera Indica (Mango) Seed Butter, Limnanthes Alba (Meadowfoam) Seed Oil, Hydrogenated Olive Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter Extract, Phenoxyethanol, Blue 1 Lake (CI 42090), Red 27 (CI 45410), Iron Oxides (CI 77499), Manganese Violet (CI 77741).

Highlighted ingredients are key actives. Blue 1 Lake (CI 42090) is the primary colourant responsible for the navy appearance in the tube and the blue-to-berry optical shift on the lips. The formula is unscented and shares its nourishing base with Medieval and Frog Prince — Castor Oil for slip, Shea and Mango Butters for comfort, Vitamin E for antioxidant protection.

Why Hello Sailor Became a Cult Product

💙
Blue-to-Berry Shift
The translucent navy blue blended with each wearer's natural lip colour to produce a personalised cool-toned berry — softer on pale lips, richer on deeper tones.
🦷
Tooth-Whitening Effect
The blue pigment counteracted yellow tones in tooth enamel, making teeth appear measurably whiter — a bonus that no other mainstream lip colour offered.
💧
Balm-Like Comfort
Castor Oil, Shea Butter, and Mango Seed Butter delivered deep nourishment. Wearers consistently described it as feeling like a nourishing lip treatment rather than a lipstick.
🎨
Brilliant as a Topper
Layered over a berry or plum base, Hello Sailor added a cool topaz shimmer and gloss dimension that made any dark lip richer and more complex.

Our Recommended Alternatives

Three products that capture the spirit of Hello Sailor — the same sheer cool-berry tint, balm-like comfort, and blue-based brightness — for different use cases and budgets.

Dior
Lip Glow in Berry

The closest mainstream alternative to Hello Sailor's colour-reactive premise. Dior Lip Glow uses a pH-reactive formula that enhances your natural lip tone — and Berry variant delivers a cool, personalised rosy-berry result very close in character to Hello Sailor's on-lips effect. The formula is similarly balm-like and conditioning, carrying the same "your lips but better" quality that made Hello Sailor so wearable. Widely available and beloved by the same type of beauty lover.

Givenchy
Le Rouge Interdit Intense Silk N°1

For those who want the visual drama of blue in the bullet combined with a sheer result on the lips, Givenchy's N°1 shade — which appears almost black in the tube but swatches as a sheer berry-plum — delivers a very similar experience to Hello Sailor. The same idea: a colour that shocks in the packaging and flatters in practice. The formula is richer and more pigmented than Hello Sailor, but can be applied lightly for a comparable sheer effect.

NARS
Afterglow Lip Balm in Dolce Vita

For those who loved Hello Sailor primarily as a daily moisturising berry tint rather than a colour experiment, NARS Afterglow in Dolce Vita is the most reliable everyday alternative. A sheer rosy-mauve with cool undertones that sits comfortably in the same colour family as Hello Sailor's result on medium skin tones. The Afterglow formula is extremely hydrating and comfortable — arguably more so than Hello Sailor — and available everywhere Lipstick Queen once was.

What Wearers Said

"I discovered Lipstick Queen because of Hello Sailor. I'm on my third tube."

I loved everything about this lipstick — the name, the packaging, the pin-up artwork on the box, and most of all the colour it turned my lips. I'm cool-toned and pale and this gave me the most perfect muted berry that I have never found in any other product. I wear it constantly, including as a topper over my Sinner lipsticks. Gutted it's gone.

"It is so comfortable that I completely forget I have anything on my lips. It literally feels like a balm."

I bought both Hello Sailor and Frog Prince at the same time because I couldn't decide. They go on so smooth and feel the same — no weird smell, no tackiness, nothing heavy. Hello Sailor gave me the most gorgeous raisin-rose shade. I'm a neutral-to-warm gal who usually can't do cool tones, but this just worked. The slight blue made everything cooler in the best way.

"Very sheer — but that's the entire point, and on the right skin tone it's absolutely stunning."

Hello Sailor is not for everyone. If you have deeply pigmented lips or want full coverage, look elsewhere. But if you're cool-toned and want a barely-there berry that makes your whole face look more interesting and your teeth look brighter — this is the product. I wore it as a topper over everything and it elevated every single lip look. The novelty of applying a blue lipstick never got old either.
