Discontinued — Limited Secondary Market Availability

Mornin' Sunshine has been discontinued along with the wider Lipstick Queen range. The distinctive hyacinth blue metal tube makes it identifiable on eBay and Poshmark. The yellow bullet inside is unmistakable. Because this was originally a Space NK exclusive, it was not as widely distributed as Frog Prince, meaning secondhand stock is somewhat rarer. We recommend the alternatives below as your best ongoing options.

Mornin' Sunshine was the third product in Lipstick Queen's pH-transforming colour family — joining Frog Prince (green → pink) and Hello Sailor (navy → blue-tinted berry) as a lipstick that defied its own visual identity on application. Where its siblings were cool and mysterious, Mornin' Sunshine was unabashedly joyful: a vivid sunshine yellow that turned coral-to-watermelon the moment it touched lips, making every application a small act of optimism.

Launched in 2017 as a Space NK exclusive that became the retailer's bestselling lipstick within weeks, it used the same Red 21 (CI 45380) pH-reactive dye technology as Frog Prince and Hello Sailor — a dye that shifts from yellow to pink-red in response to the slightly acidic environment of the lips. The result ranged from an uplifting coral on cooler, more acidic lip chemistries to an edible watermelon pink on warmer ones. Housed in a matte hyacinth blue metal tube — a colour choice that created the most photogenic contrast possible with the yellow bullet inside — it was described by one reviewer as "the Goldilocks of lipstick formulas": creamy, pigmented, no chalkiness, no excessive gloss.

Sunshine in a Tube — The Warmest pH-Shifting Lipstick

Mornin' Sunshine launched in early 2017 as the third entry in Lipstick Queen's pH-adapting colour family — the one that, unlike its cooler and more enigmatic siblings, wore its mood unambiguously on its sleeve. Where Frog Prince's forest green carried a fairy-tale mystique and Hello Sailor's deep navy suggested nocturnal adventure, Mornin' Sunshine was sunrise optimism in lipstick form. Poppy King's directive was explicit: "Add a smile to your dial." The brand positioned it as the product that made every day a good one.

It launched as a Space NK exclusive in the US and became that retailer's bestselling lipstick within a matter of weeks — a remarkable commercial achievement for a $25 lipstick that spent most of its life looking like something you'd use to colour-correct a bruise rather than wear in public. The yellow bullet, in its matte hyacinth blue metal case, was frankly arresting. Reviewers who had bought it online often admitted to a moment of alarm when they opened the package. The payoff when it hit the lips — a warm, peachy-coral that settled into exactly the kind of flattering flush that made skin look sun-kissed and eyes look brighter — was the whole pleasure of the product.

Like Frog Prince, Mornin' Sunshine was officially limited edition at launch, but its commercial success kept it in production for several years before the brand's wider discontinuation. Its relationship to Frog Prince was frequently described by reviewers who owned both: Frog Prince pulled cooler and bluer-pink; Mornin' Sunshine resolved warmer and more coral. Many wearers who found Frog Prince too pink for their colouring found Mornin' Sunshine the better choice — and vice versa.

The pH Science — Yellow to Coral to Watermelon

Mornin' Sunshine's colour transformation was driven by the same dye chemistry as Frog Prince and Hello Sailor: Red 21 (CI 45380), a halogenated fluorescein dye that shifts colour in response to changes in pH. The lips have a slightly acidic surface pH (typically 5.5–7.0), which causes the yellow-orange dye in the formula to shift toward pink-red on application. The exact result depends on individual lip chemistry — principally how acidic your lip surface is.

Unlike Frog Prince, which contained no yellow pigment and appeared green in the tube primarily because of the strongly blue-toned base carrying the Red 21 dye, Mornin' Sunshine contained both Yellow 5 Lake and Red 21. The Yellow 5 Lake contributed the sunshine-yellow appearance in the tube and the warm, golden undertone that pushed the final result toward coral rather than cool pink. This is why Mornin' Sunshine resolved warmer than Frog Prince even on the same wearer: the yellow chromophore stayed in the mix on the lips, warming the Red 21's pink shift into coral or watermelon territory.

Warm coral to watermelon

Because the transformation range is warm rather than cool, Mornin' Sunshine tended to be more universally flattering across skin tones than Frog Prince — the coral and watermelon outcomes flatter warm, neutral, and cool complexions in ways that cool pink can fail to do. Deeper skin tones consistently reported a vibrant watermelon result; lighter and cooler complexions tended toward the coral end of the spectrum.

The Summer Nourishing Formula

The Mornin' Sunshine formula was closely related to Ice Queen — both used the same Castor Seed Oil and Candelilla Wax base with the same rich conditioning oil complex: Shea Butter (twice), Mango Seed Butter, Meadowfoam Seed Oil, Hydrogenated Olive Oil, and Sunflower Seed Oil. This placed it firmly in the more nourishing end of the Lipstick Queen lipstick spectrum, closer to Ice Queen's conditioning profile than to the Butterfly Ball's lighter, glossier formula.

The key distinguishing ingredient was Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate — a stable, oil-soluble form of Vitamin C that added antioxidant protection and a brightening quality to the formula. This was an unusual inclusion for a lipstick and contributed to the brightening, energising effect that reviewers noticed. The formula also contained Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E) as a further antioxidant and conditioning agent.

The pH-shifting chemistry came from the combination of Yellow 5 Lake (CI 19140) and Red 21 (CI 45380). Yellow 5 is a stable, non-reactive yellow azo dye; Red 21 is the halogenated fluorescein dye that shifts from yellow-orange to pink-red at the slightly acidic lip surface pH. The combination of these two dyes in the right ratio produced the formula's distinctive yellow appearance in the tube and its warm coral-to-watermelon result on the lips. Space NK noted that the formula was "very lip-balm like in texture — very moisturising for travel and sunshine."

How to Get the Best from Mornin' Sunshine

01
Trust the Process

Apply directly from the bullet to bare lips and wait 30 seconds. The yellow will appear clear immediately on application, then begin developing to coral or watermelon over the next 30–60 seconds as the Red 21 dye responds to your lip pH. Do not judge the result from the application — the first colour you see on the brush or your hand is not the colour you will wear. Reviewers consistently noted that the final result was significantly more attractive than the intermediate stages.

02
Build Through the Day

The semi-sheer formula built intensity with each application. One pass delivered a light, flattering wash of colour; reapplying through the day deepened the result progressively. Multiple wearers noted that the morning application was lighter and more coral, while reapplications through the afternoon produced a slightly deeper, more watermelon result as the dye layered up. The Temptalia reviewer reported 4.5 hours of comfortable, moderately hydrating wear.

03
Wear with a Tan

Mornin' Sunshine was consistently described as particularly spectacular with a sun-tan — the coral and watermelon results against bronzed skin were what reviewers reported wearing "day and night for three months straight." The warm-toned result complemented warm, golden skin especially beautifully, and the nourishing Meadowfoam and Sunflower Oil formula was perfectly suited to the lip care needed in sunny, warm-weather conditions.

Full Ingredient List

As listed on the 0.12 oz formulation (Space NK / Temptalia / Ulta):

Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Vegetable Oil (Olus/Huile Vegetale), Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax (Candelilla Cera/Cire De Candelilla), Beeswax (Cera Alba/Cire D'Abeille), Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Ozokerite, Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil, Mangifera Indica (Mango) Seed Butter, Phenoxyethanol, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Limnanthes Alba (Meadowfoam) Seed Oil, Hydrogenated Olive Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate (Vitamin C), Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter Extract, Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Yellow 5 Lake (CI 19140), Red 21 (CI 45380).

Highlighted ingredients are key actives. Red 21 (CI 45380) is the pH-reactive halogenated fluorescein dye responsible for the yellow-to-coral transformation. Yellow 5 Lake contributes to the tube colour and warms the final result on lips toward coral/watermelon rather than cool pink. Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate is an oil-soluble, stable Vitamin C — an unusual inclusion in a lipstick that adds antioxidant protection. No fragrance, paraben-free. Made in Canada.

Why Mornin' Sunshine Was Worth the Smile

☀️
Warm pH Transformation
Where Frog Prince and Hello Sailor transformed cool, Mornin' Sunshine transformed warm — the Yellow 5 Lake kept the result firmly in coral-to-watermelon territory, universally flattering on all skin tones.
🎨
The Hyacinth Blue Tube
The matte blue metal case against the yellow bullet was one of the most photographed and immediately recognisable products in the entire Lipstick Queen range — packaging as an act of pure optimism.
🍊
Goldilocks Formula
BeautyGeekUK described it as "the Goldilocks of lipstick formulas" — creamy but not glossy, pigmented without chalkiness, comfortable without being slippery. Everything exactly right.
🌿
Vitamin C + E Antioxidants
The rare inclusion of Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate (stable Vitamin C) alongside Vitamin E gave Mornin' Sunshine an antioxidant profile unusual for a pH-shifting lip product.

Our Recommended Alternatives

Three products that deliver the spirit of Mornin' Sunshine — the same warm pH-adaptive transformation, the same joyful coral result, and the same nourishing formula philosophy.

Dior
Lip Glow in Coral

The most direct equivalent to Mornin' Sunshine's coral output — and one that several MakeupAlley reviewers directly compared it to. Dior Lip Glow in Coral (004) is a pH-adaptive lip balm that enhances each wearer's natural lip colour toward a warm coral result, using a similar colour-enhancing technology to the Red 21 chemistry in Mornin' Sunshine. The result on lips is strikingly similar: a personalised, warm, flattering coral that looks healthy and sun-kissed rather than obviously applied. The formula is significantly more conditioning than Mornin' Sunshine alone and includes SPF 10.

Charlotte Tilbury
Matte Revolution in Tropical Pop

For fans who loved Mornin' Sunshine specifically for its warm coral result — and who want that coral in a more pigmented, reliable, non-variable formula — Charlotte Tilbury Tropical Pop delivers the same vibrant warm-coral territory in a creamy satin-matte. The shade sits squarely within Mornin' Sunshine's transformation range (its deeper end), and the formula is among the most nourishing available in a full-coverage coral. For those who found the pH variability frustrating and wanted the coral result predictably every time, this is the answer.

NARS
Semi Matte Lipstick in Niagara

For those who loved Mornin' Sunshine as their go-to holiday and summer lip, NARS Niagara captures the warm, vivid coral energy in a semi-matte format with comparable lasting power and a similarly lightweight feel on the lips. The shade sits between Mornin' Sunshine's coral and watermelon outcomes — warm enough to look tropical and sun-kissed, structured enough to last through a day of activities. The NARS semi-matte formula matches Mornin' Sunshine's comfortable mid-point between gloss and matte that reviewers called "the Goldilocks formula."

What Wearers Said

"This is a great summer holiday lipstick. It looks brilliant with a tan. Very lip-balm like in texture. I wore it day and night for three months straight."

Very bright so I keep the rest of my face very light and let the colour do all the talking. It is as moisturising as the best lip balm I own, which makes it perfect for travel and sunshine. The colour builds through the day — lighter coral in the morning, a deeper watermelon pink by the evening if you keep reapplying. It is completely joyful. I had Frog Prince and Hello Sailor already and this is my favourite of the three.

"It starts out yellow in the bullet, applies clear, then quickly changes into a bright peachy pink coral. No scent, no taste. The blue case with yellow bullet is absolutely beautiful."

I was intrigued by Mornin' Sunshine as a pH lipstick that turns peachy and coral rather than fuchsia. On me it delivers exactly a warm coral pink — not too bright, not too dull. It is hydrating and gives me a really youthful healthy look. It is a better result for my colouring than Frog Prince, which runs cooler. I could not find it in my usual stores after discontinuation and had to order it from Amazon at a premium. Worth it.

"The formula is the Goldilocks of lipstick formulas — creamy rather than glossy, pigmented without chalkiness. Not too much of anything."

Do not be fooled by the bright yellow of the bullet. Once applied it becomes a much more wearable shade of pink that depends on your lip pH. On my arm it is a bright mid pink and on my lips a slightly darker, almost light berry. It is unlikely to go too extreme either way — you will end up with an easy, wearable shade. The formula is beautiful. One of the few lipsticks I have worn all day without ever wanting to remove it.
